Snowboard, Ski

Aspen, which is the home of the Alpine World Ski Championships, is located in the majestic Rocky Mountain range in Colorado. It’s a dream destination for thousands of skiers and boarders each year, and people come from all over the world to enjoy the perfect powder snow that’s there thanks to the union of the diverse meteorological factors, both the distance from ocean masses and the closeness to desert areas contribute to the abundance of snow and unsurpassable condition. It’s normal that the virgin snow reaches your knees in the off piste areas, although you’ll also find plenty of groomed zones so you can also enjoy the speed factor and practice your carving skills. Thankfully, Aspen is home to snowboarders again, as the ban that was imposed, denying boarders access to the station, was lifted in 2001.

Aspen is made up of four different mountains and has an infinity of possibilities: Aspen Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands y Aspen Buttermilk.

You’ll find Aspen Snowmass in the White River National Forest, nine kilometres from Aspen Village. It has 21 lifts that will take you to a maximum altitude of 3.813 metres and you can enjoy skiing or boarding the 91 lengthy pistes which cover 250 kilometres. The first, Snowmass, is primarily for advanced skiers and boarders as the highlights of this area are the routes through the glades, with lots of steeps and small cliffs along the way. If you want to go off piste, the best option is Hanging Valley and Cirque, but don’t forget your helmet. Another good route is Baby Ruth. Of the four stations, it’s the largest and has the biggest vertical descent in the United States (1.246 metres). There are also three first class snowparks where the Winter X Games are celebrated. The 22 foot Superpipe is the star attraction but there is another smaller pipe for intermediates. It’s accessed by the Coney Glade chair and there is a small mountain next to it where you can discover the many natural kickers.

Aspen Colorado

Aspen Mountain rises from the centre of the village, has 8 lifts, a maximum altitude of 3.418 metres and 141 kilometres of excellent pistes. It’s an original station, which since 1947, millions of users have fallen in love with for its rapid slopes, although off piste routes are practically inexistent in this zone.

Aspen Highlands is three kilometres away from Aspen Village, in White River National Forest. It has five lifts and a maximum altitude of 3.559 metres. Once you’re at the top, you’ll have a stunning 360 degree panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains and after, a world of descents is at your feet with 122 very difficult pistes covering 135 kilometres. The little off piste that it possesses is for experts only. It’s the chosen place for the locals.

Finally, Aspen Buttermilk is five kilometres away from Aspen Village and ten from Aspen Snowmass. It has 8 lifts, a maximum altitude of 3.058 metres and is suitable for families and beginners as its 44 pistes, which cover 31 kilometres, are very wide and gentle. There are also two snowparks which are ideal for intermediates and advanced, with more than 100 elements, a Superpipe and the slopestyle course from the X Games.

Conditions

Thanks to its unique characteristics the snow quality in Aspen is above average. The winter season begins at the end of November. As it’s a natural park with wildlife, there are some restrictions, like when the hibernation season of the Colorado Black bears finishes (usually around the end of April), the station closes. You can enjoy 100% of the skiable areas and the best snow quality during January and February.
